Mathematics (MSc)
Graduate Program Overview
Solve Abstract Problems. Conduct Rigorous Inquiry. Shape Applied Insights.
The Master of Science in Mathematics (MSc) at Nipissing University combines advanced coursework with either a Major Research Paper (MRP) or a Thesis track. Ideal for those seeking foundational depth or applied mathematical exploration, the program prepares graduates for careers in academia, industry, government, and more.
Program Highlights
Through this 24-credit program, you will:
- Complete key courses like General Topology and Functional Analysis, plus electives in algebra, cryptography, graph theory, optimization, and computational math
- Submit either a Major Research Paper (6 credits plus six courses in three terms) or a full Thesis (12 credits plus four courses in six terms)
- Focus on solving open mathematical problems and defending your work before an examination committee
- Develop advanced methods in mathematical theory, computation, and problem solving
- Engage in a small graduate cohort with access to rich faculty support and academic resources
Program Structure
Choose Program Type
Thesis Route:
Full-time Length: 2 year
Flex-time Length: Up to 4 years
The thesis route requires students to become more deeply proficient in an area of mathematics than is standard in an MRP. A thesis is generally (depending on the topic) longer and more detailed than an MRP. Because of its more advanced nature, a thesis requires more time to complete than an MRP. Additionally, a thesis generally (but not always) contains multi- and inter-disciplinary aspects, and will usually involve research into advanced areas of mathematics and computational science.
Major Research Paper (MRP):
Full-time Length: 1 year
Through the MRP, the student must show the ability to work independently in a scholarly manner. The MRP does not have to make a significant original contribution to academic knowledge of the subject, but it must display extensive research and independent analysis. Students must demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the literature relating to the topic.

Meet our Faculty
Discover how mathematics can open doors to a wide range of scientific, technical, and analytical careers
Our Faculty of Mathematics is dedicated to providing students with a strong foundation in analytical thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning. With small class sizes and close faculty-student interaction, students are supported through every stage of their studies in a learning environment that emphasizes both rigour and accessibility.
Dr. Logan Hoehn
Faculty of Arts and Science – Computer Science and Mathematics
Dr. L. Hoehn, a mathematician specializing in continuum theory, low-dimensional topology, and dynamical systems in the plane. Originally from Saskatoon, he completed his BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Saskatchewan, followed by his MSc and PhD at the University of Toronto. His doctoral work, Non-chainable continua and Lelek’s problem, received national recognition and was nominated for major Canadian awards. Dr. Hoehn’s research experience includes international study, postdoctoral work in the United States, and a long-standing commitment to mathematical scholarship and teaching at Nipissing University.
