Alternate Offer FAQ

We’ve collected some of our most common questions from undergraduate applicants below to help you plan and prepare.

Get in touch with our team if you still have questions – we’re happy to help.

There are many reasons why you could have received an alternate offer. Potential reasons include (but are not limited to):

  • The program you applied to was a competitive program (ie. Nursing). You did not meet the required average for admission to the program.
  • You did not meet the minimum average for the program applied to.
  • You were missing required prerequisite(s).
    • Examples:

      • Missing one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics for BSc Math
      • Do not have a minimum 70% in ENG4U for BSW
      • Do not have a 60% in a 3U, 3M or 4U Math for Concurrent Education

Contact the Admissions Office at [email protected] if you have any questions regarding your alternate offer.

It will depend on the original program you applied to and the reason you receive an alternate offer. There may be options you can consider immediately or options that you can consider during your first year at Nipissing. We encourage you to reach out to us as soon as possible to discuss your options.

The following are upper year options available if you choose to accept your alternate offer and attend Nipissing.

  • Limited enrollment/competitive programs (Nursing, BPHE, BA History with OMAH)
    • Nursing and BPHE
      • Must complete a minimum of 18 credits by the end of first year with a minimum overall average of 70%
      • Must have successfully completed SBI4U and SCH4U or equivalent for Nursing and SBI4U or PSK4U or equivalent for BPHE.
      • Meeting the minimum requirements for consideration does not guarantee admission. Upper year consideration is competitive, and you may be required to have a higher average than the stated minimum.
      • Transfer application opens each fall at the end of September. The equal consideration deadline* to apply is February 16.
    • BA History with OMAH
      • Must complete a minimum of 18 credits and no more than 30 credits (including transfer credits) by the end of first year with a minimum overall average of 72%.
      • Meeting the minimum requirements for consideration does not guarantee admission. Upper year consideration is competitive, and you may be required to have a higher average than the stated minimum.
      • Transfer application opens each fall at the end of September. The equal consideration deadline* to apply is February 16.
      • Upper year admission is dependent on space availability.
    • Social Work
      • Students interested in completing a Social Work degree do not need to be in BSW to apply to the professional years of the program.
      • If you wish to be in the BSW general years (Year 1 and 2) you can request a program change after first year by emailing [email protected].
      • Must have successfully completed ENG4U or equivalent with a minimum 70% and meet the progression requirements of the BSW degree.
    • Concurrent Education
      • Can apply after completing a minimum of 18 credits and no more than 72 credits (including transfer credits) with an overall university average of 70%.
      • Must have successfully completed of a 3U, 3M or 4U Math (or equivalent) with a minimum 60%. Transfer application opens each fall at the end of September. Deadline to apply is April 1.
    • All others
      • Request a program change as early as the end of the first term by emailing [email protected].
      • Must show completion of missing prerequisite(s) (if applicable)

Note: With the exception of Nursing and BPHE, applicants who received an alternate offer because of missing a prerequisite(s) can complete what is missing in summer school. Once completed, they can submit their final grade and request that we reconsider their application for their original choice program.

*These highly competitive programs, typically, have more qualified applicants than space available. This is the deadline to apply to receive equal consideration for admission with all other applicants. Programs may continue to accept applications after this date. Qualified applicants will continue to be considered for admission provided room remains in the program, otherwise a position on the waiting list may be offered.

Please review the chart above. Find the program you intend to apply to. You do not have to apply to the program(s) listed in the alternate offer column for that program. What is listed is the program(s) we will automatically consider you for. However, if you wish to be considered for another program that is not listed in the alternate offer column you must include it as an application choice when applying to Nipissing.

Examples:

Program of Interest: Bachelor of Science – Mathematics

You do not need to apply to the Bachelor of Arts – Mathematics program as well. If you are not eligible for the Bachelor of Science program, we will automatically consider you for the Bachelor of Arts – Mathematics program.

Program of Interest: Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (BPHE)

The alternate offer programs that we would consider you for if you were not eligible for BPHE are Bachelor of Science – Biology or Bachelor of Arts – Undeclared. Maybe those programs don’t appeal to you. You would prefer to be in a Bachelor of Arts – Psychology degree program if you were not admissible to BPHE. In that case, you would need to indicate the Bachelor of Arts – Psychology program as a second Nipissing program choice on your application.
